Shoulder Pain Acupuncture

Just below your neck are your shoulders. When we experience stress, we carry it here just about as often as we carry it anywhere else. If you are feeling tension and pain in your shoulders, we are speaking to you. Get help and feel better soon.

What causes shoulder pain?

There can be any number of reasons why pain can develop in the shoulders. It could be a trickle-down effect from the neck. Stiffness in the neck due to poor posture or circulation can extend down into the shoulders.

When we are stressed, we often hunch our shoulders without knowing it. Keeping your muscles tensed for that long can lead to pain and stiffness. That stress can also be physical. When lifting heavy objects or working over your head for a long period of time (changing light bulbs, painting, holding something up), the shoulders experience pain.

Age rears its head again. Getting older often means getting stiffer in the joints. You can’t do all the things you used to do and, if you try, you may end up with shoulder pain.

However you ended up with your shoulder pain, your doctor may suggest a course of treatment based on your symptoms. Ask them to consider acupuncture as a way to bring pain relief and begin moving towards complete upper body mobility again.

How can shoulder pain acupuncture help?

Using the Chinese principle of energy flow or qi, shoulder pain will be thought to be a result of blocked qi in the shoulder region. Unless that energy is released, the pain will continue. Acupuncture needles are placed according to the location of the pain and its respect to the body’s meridians.

Studies have been done on the effects of shoulder pain acupuncture on spinal cord injury patients. When the lower half of the body is no longer working to support their weight, the arms take on doing the majority of the work. This is a quick way to end up with painful shoulders. Acupuncture improved the use of the shoulder and lowered the pain.

Shoulder pain acupuncture may be the first step in shoulder pain treatment. When you are not in constant pain, you are more susceptible to other forms of pain relief. If the pain is due to injury because of atrophy of the muscle, such as with old age, the muscle strength will need to be built up again.

Someone who is already in pain may be reluctant to perform weight bearing exercises as a part of physical therapy. With the addition of shoulder pain acupuncture, they won’t have to fear the pain they have been feeling and can get on with rehabilitation.

Acupuncture pain management is slowly but surely getting the recognition as a viable medical treatment. For some pain it can be used alone to affect pain relief. For others, like shoulder pain, it is a vital part of a treatment program designed to heal the injured joint and relief the pain. The treatment is safe and, with repeated sessions, can increase mobility.
